I need a good name for a male character in a series I'm working on, help?

The series will be young-adult fiction and adventure.

The male character is the going to be a love interest of the main character Anastasia (aka Ana) and I am looking for a name that sounds compatible with hers. Please Help!

Alek is Russian and would work well with your heroine's name. Personally it's one of my favorites, the name of a friend of mine, and very masculine and unique.
Reply:I write too and I use the name Patrick a lot in drafts. I also suggest Taylor or Frankie. Maybe even something plain like Richard to balance out the unusual name of your female character. Or you could always try searching a character trait of his to find a name which means that.

People will respect it. it's one syllable and easy to say with commands.

Also train him in German. That way only you have the commands...not everyone else and very few people will be able to make your dog do things...that makes YOU the boss. Dobermans are wonderful dogs but they are very strong willed.

Reply:I suggest not going with something mexican inspired - everyone does that with chihuahua's and it gets kind of old. And don't name him something inspired by his size either - my grandma had four different chihuahua's and their names were tiny, tiny man, little bit, and teeny (seriously). It also gets old. Think of something unique. I actually would suggest waiting until you get the dog and see what kind of personality he has before you name him - you may come up with a more suited, interesting, and unique name that way. Hope this helped. Sorry I couldn't give you examples but you really have to "know" the dog to do that.

Reply:We like to use "mouse" names for chihuahuas. We had "Bianca" from the Rescuers and we have Mattimeo (from the book of the same name about a mouse). Benard is the male mouse in the Rescuers in case you are wondering.

The other thing we looked at was the chihuahua on "Oliver and Company", Tito. He had a huge list of names and one of them was Ignacio which we used for one of out dogs.

You really need to just get to know him better and go from there.

Ideally ... have the name make some sort of connection with you and your dog.

Find out what his parents' names were and play off of that. Or play off of where he was born.

For example ...

We have a Berner named Marley - her mother was named Jamaica, so we played off of that and Bob Marley.

We have a Berner named Topaz - because one of her eyes is blue.

We have a Berner named Keeneland - because he is from Kentucky, home of the big Keeneland horse sale.

We have a Berner named Panda - because she has black spots on the white on her face.

We have a Berner named Molson - because he is from Canada and my wife and I got to know each other in college while drinking Molson each night at local bar.

We have a Berner named Nicki - because the bar we drank at in college was named Nick's and she was born just outside of the town it is located in.

Any way, have fun with it and be creative. Choose a name that has meaning to you, or your dog, and go from there.

I used to have a site bookmarked where you'd enter a name and you would be told whether the name was male or female.

This used a US census, and would tell you the percentage likelihood. Does anyone know this site or something similar. I get a lot of international queries in my job and would like to not offend people by getting it wrong.

How to tell if a name is male or female?
well some names are simply 100% male, like John, Michael etc.

smoe are 100% female, like Mary, Lisa etc.

there are a few unisex names, Rene is one of them e.g.

i suppose you could determin the 'likely hood' of a rene being female by using statistics. (names registered in the last 100 years)

if you want to know foreign names, you could try some 'babynames' websites.

Reply:I usually name my birds based on something that I can be identifiable with. For example, I had a bird named Sonnie for 17 years and got him from a family member who named him after her grandpa. And then I got a bird that reminded me of clouds, so I named him Cloudy. Unfortunately, Cloudy had health problems and only lived for about nine or ten months. When Sonnie died about a year after Cloudy on Sep. 28, 2001 I knew in the morning that he was dying and would likely not make it when I came home after school and football practice. It took until last April to get another parakeet because no bird could match Sonnie in my mind. He really was attached to me and people in general.

Back to the question: I went to Petco to get a female last year. First female parakeet I ever had. I named her Beleza, which is a Portuguese word meaning Beauty or Beautiful. And that's because she is really good looking bird. The newest bird I've had for two days and Beleza took to him really well she preens him, teaches him better flying, and seems happier. But I hope I don't end up with a whole flock a birds.

So, I named him Jay Bird when I left the store and then the name Gary popped in my head and I had it changed. I also have a Kramer portrait in my room and Gary bounces off of it and onto his cage a lot. So now, I gave him the full name of Gary Cosmo Kramer. I call him Big G, Cosmo, Kramer, or Gary but usually Gary and increasingly I call him Kramer. Just name him for an attribute or something memorable that he's done.If he flies and clings on to clothes a lot you could call him Clinger. Eventually he will do something that should give you a good idea for a name. Good luck.

Benjamin -- I've always loved this name. Then there's Benji and Ben. Or um, Min, if you want to be unique. Haha, stick with the first two.

Elliot -- Not many nicknames, maybe Ellie? (As in L.E.) Or just plain El. Elliot is short enough on it's own to not need a nickname.

Theodore -- Teddy! I think that's just adorable. Or just Theo.

Julian/Julius -- One of my favorites. Also short enough to not need a nickname, but Jewels (Jules) comes to mind. Warning, used in The It Girl, but it's not as unusual like Jasper or Carlyle, so using it wouldnt make the character from The It Girl spring to mind. (It was found in a search of old-fashioned boys names)

Ezra -- Different, but really sexy. Warning, it was used in Pretty Little Liars, but I came across it on an 'old-fashioned boys names' search.

Clement -- Clem? This reminds me of Clementine, which I adore.

Conrad -- Nuff said. Coolest name...Ever. Haha, he's 'rad'. As in ConRAD. :)

Warren -- Wren/Ren as a nickname? Its pretty short on its own, so you probably don't need one.

Kendal -- I know a guy named this. Sounds kind of dorky at first, but if you fit it with a character sexy enough, it'll work. Before Twilight, Edward was an oldman name. Nickname: Ken?

Avery -- A little femenin, but it is a unisex name, so it could work. Ave could be a nickname.

Everett -- One of my favorites. It's quite sexy, if I do say so myself. Ev or Rett as nicknames? Its reaching, but do-able.

Adam -- If I ever have a boy, I shall name him Adam. It's the sexiest old fashioned name out there. It's pretty old, I mean, Adam and Eve right? I'm ireligious though, so the name has no religious meaning to me. Too short to have a nickname though.

Atticus -- I love Atticus Finch. But if you named your character this people would automatically think of the character from To Kill a Mockingbird.

And finally... Elijah. Same with Elliot, short enough for no nickname, but Eli (As in E-LIE) or maybe just Lye (I'd spell it Lie, but it's brings the word's meaning to mind, so as a name Lye would work better)

It means bold and sorrowful. It's a very old European name. Brad Pitt's character had it in Legends of the Fall.

Actually I would wait awhile until his personality starts to show.I always did that with my pets and always ended up with the perfect names for them.

My favorite was Mister-- a black and white Rottweiler mix.He looked like he was in a tux and he was very gentle.

His sister was named Chula which can mean "pretty" and " rascally" , and she was both.

My neighbor had a dog named "Trouble".....and he was just that.

I had a white cat named Dandruff because he was as irritating as having dandruff. He was always into something.

Reply:I think your best bet is to just observe him for a little while and see what suits him. My cats name is Nicodemus (the leader of the rats in Mrs. Fribsy and the Rats of Nimh (book) or the Secrets of Nimh (movie)). Mainly because he just emitted this all powerful regalness even if he was just sitting perfectly still. And since my husband and I had just watched the movie, it was said that he 'looked just like Nicodemus' and he's been Nicodemus ever sense. Well, Nico for short.

Then when we got a new kitten, we just brought her home and let her loose to see what she would do. Well, she tore tushie right after Nico and after watching them run around the house for an hour, we shouted 'Chase' and she came running. So now it's Nico and Chase. My spoiled little angels.

So after all this blabbering, my point is, just watch him and see what you come up with and how he responds. It's been my experience that they will respond to a name they like, so go with it.

But if all else fails, when you said it looks like he's wearing a tux, I thought of Frank Sinatra for whatever reason, maybe you can use that somehow...lol :-)

It's pretty. Chanda (not Chandra) is Hindi for "moon" and Sanskrit for "goddess" and is usually considered a female name.

Reply:If these are the names you like test them out on your kitten. Say each name to him and if he responds to one of them, then that should be his name. Kittens have a way of naming themselves. I did this with my 10 month old kitten. He's all black, so i was saying original names like Midnight, Smokey and others. He just sat there and looked at me like I was stupid or something. I was talking to my friend and she came up with the name Cupid. I said Cupid and he meowed at me and put his belly in the air. He fits his name to a tee, he's such a mommy's boy.

Best bet is to call or email Netflix and ask them if there will be confusion. You could tell them that Card Name is gifting Male Name a subscription if that makes it easier.

I have 9 bettas, 4 Males and 5 Females. I named them Ace, Valentine, Sapphire and Dragoon for my boys and Snowy, Ruby, Breeze, Cherry, Glynis for my girls. Maybe you can try other name like Rain, Bullet, Cargo, Ziv, Ranger, Storm, Freeze, Genius, Cool Warrior, Kinga, Terryaki, Power, Quil, Delson.

Since your cat is a cinnamon point, I read that in Thailand (which is where the cats originated) they call Cinnamon - "Ob Choei" or an alternate could be Nutmeg, in Thai it is "Luk Chan".

If you don't care about the name being specifically Siamese sounding, just tough and snowy, then how about Yeti, that snow creature of the Himalayas? Hope this is helpful!

You copied me! JK. My dog is named Skittles and I do call her Skitts, Skitties, Skttilicious, Skittzies, I create new words everyday. My boyfriend calls her the Skittlest.

I didn't name her though I adopted her with that name. So it's nice to see someone else thinking Skittles Finally!

I think she definately matches up to her name Skittles, and I'm sure your dog will too. HIgh energy, cute face, cute personality....it'll match.

So go right ahead call your dog Skittles. Beware though people will laugh (and be sure to laugh right along with them).

Also be sure when you train your dog that your dog first recognizes the name "Skittles," then once you get him trained and he recognizes it then go right ahead and call the short terms. My dog recognizes the short terms a little bit, sometimes I think she likes them because when we call her that she kisses us.

I would avoid the short form, though, for two reasons. A) it's more difficult to yell a single syllable when you are calling him into the house or training, and B) 'the skitts' is a dialect word for 'the runs' - or diarrhea.... :O

My Partner and I like the biblical name Sodom. We are agreed on naming our child Sodom Stanley Schofield.

We might choose a different second name, but I definately like Sodom.
